Broadway Stars Mary Beth Peil and Judd Hirsch Lend Their Support at the Opening of The Lying Lesson

Atlantic Theater Company celebrated the world premiere of Craig Lucas' new play starring Carol Kane and Mickey Sumner.

By New York City

Atlantic Theater Company celebrated the opening of playwright Craig Lucas' world premiere production of The Lying Lesson on Wednesday, March 13 at the Linda Gross Theater. The comic thriller stars Mickey Sumner (Showtime's The Borgias), making her off-Broadway debut, and film, television, and Broadway veteran Carol Kane (Harvey). Directed by Tony nominee Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park), performances of The Lying Lesson are scheduled to run through March 31.

In The Lying Lesson, Kane plays legendary actress Bette Davis who is in the process of buying a house in Maine from an elderly couple. She soon meets a local young woman named Missy Bodine (Sumner) who charmingly has never heard of the film star. As Davis proceeds to share her dramatic life story with the girl, Lucas weaves together a plot that raises important questions about memory, identity, and truth telling.

The opening night performance was followed by a party at the chic downtown restaurant, Moran's Chelsea. Two-time Tony winner Judd Hirsch (I'm Not Rappaport) and Tony nominee Mary Beth Peil (Follies) came out to show their support, plus several Atlantic Theater Company veterans, including actress Mary McCann (Harper Regan), actress Betsy Aidem (Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling), and playwright Gabe McKinley (CQ/CX). Atlantic Theater Company's Artistic and Managing Directors, Neil Pepe and Jeffory Lawson, were also in attendance.
