For their separate careers, brother and sister Rob and Kathleen Marshall were honored last night with Mr. Abbott Awards, named after the legendary director-writer George Abbott and presented annually by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation in conjunction with the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Here are the happy siblings, meeting the press at the start of the event.
Among the notables on hand for the awards ceremony at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers: Marc Kudisch, soon to return to Broadway as Baron Bomburst in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang….
…the amazing Chita Rivera with her daughter, Lisa Mordente…
…Debra Monk, who has worked with both Marshalls…
…and movie princess Anne Hathaway, who played Lili in the Encores! production of Carnival, directed and choreographed by Kathleen.
Rob directed and choreographed the multiple Oscar-winning film version of Chicago, and two of the movie’s stars turned out to honor him last night. Here he is with Renée Zellweger and John C. Reilly, a.k.a. Roxie and Amos Hart…
…and here’s a two-shot of Renée and Rob (with Abbott Award in hand).
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, the freakishly talented Gavin Creel — on a night off from his role of Jean-Michel in La Cage aux Folles — raised the roof at Second Stage with a pop-rock concert made up largely of terrific songs that he wrote himself.
Appearing as a special guest in Gavin Creel: Prom King was Shoshana Bean, on a night off from her role of Elphaba in Wicked.
Here’s a shot of Gav with “prom dancers” Angie Creighton, Jessica Hope, Joey Dudding, and Paul Canaan.
As if the concert wasn’t exciting enough, it included an on-stage proposal of marriage! Whitney Bashor (right), one of Gavin’s “prom singers,” had the question popped to her by boyfriend Mark Altman — whom she didn’t even know was in New York, let alone in the theater. By the way, Whitney accepted!
