Harvey Fierstein to Host 56th Annual Drama Desk Awards on May 23; Ovation Network to Air Ceremony in June

Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein will host the 56th Annual Dram Desk Awards, which will take place at 8pm on Monday, May 23 at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
The awards honor the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway.

This year’s ceremony will be filmed in HD for a television broadcast on the Ovation network on June 2 and June 15. The event will include a gala sit-down dinner during the awards presentation. As in past years, TheaterMania will be a media partner for the event.

Fierstein is hosting the ceremony for the fifth time. He is currently starring in the musical La Cage Aux Folles, which he co-wrote with Jerry Herman and for which he received a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nomination. He won the Tony and Drama Desk for his role as Edna Turnblad Hairspray and Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Torch Song Trilogy, which he wrote and starred in. He also received a Drama Desk nomination for writing the book of the musical A Catered Affair, in which he starred alongside Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, and Leslie Kritzer.
