The Australian-born Minchin launched onto the world comedy scene in 2005 with Darkside, which won the Perrier Comedy Award for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. His second show So Rock, earned both the Most Outstanding Show and the Festival Directors Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
