With a book by playwright Dennis Kelly (BBC Three's sitcom, Pulling), and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010 and in 2012 received a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards, including an award for Best Musical and a time-shared Best Actress award for the four girls in the title role.
The musical has now made its way to the Broadway stage with previews scheduled to begin on March 4 and the official opening set for April 11. The four girls sharing the title role in this production (each making her Broadway debut) are Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage), will also feature sets and costumes by Rob Howell (Ghost The Musical), choreography by Peter Darling (Billy Elliot: The Musical), orchestrations by Christopher Nightingale (Ghost The Musical), lighting by Hugh Vanstone (Ghost The Musical), and sound by Simon Baker (La Bête).
