Student Prince Star Edmund Purdom Dies at 84

Edmund Purdom, who starred in the title role of the 1954 film version of the operetta The Student Prince, died in Rome on January 1 at age 84.

Purdom gained the part when original star Mario Lanza had to drop out because he was overweight; however, Lanza sang the role in film, which also starred Ann Blyth.

Purdom’s other film credits included Julius Caesar with Marlon Brando, the musical Athena with Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell, The Yellow Rolls-Royce, written by Terrence Rattigan, and the TV movie Sophia Loren: Her Own Story, in which he played director Vittorio DeSica.

He is survived by his daughter, Lilan.
