The Color Purple, Rent, Swimming in the Shallows, et al. Nominated for GLAAD Media Awards

The Broadway musical The Color Purple, the Off-Broadway hit Swimming in the Shallows, and the fim version of Rent are among the nominees for the 17th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, which honor mainstream media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. There will be four separate awards ceremonies this year: March 27 in New York City, April 8 in Los Angeles, May 25 in Miami, and June 10 in San Francisco.

The Color Purple is nominated for Outstanding New York Theater: Broadway and Off-Broadway along with Border/Clash, Ghetto Superstar, Oedipus at Palm Springs, and Swimming in the Shallows. The nominees for Outstanding New York Theater: Off-Off-Broadway are Busted Jesus Comix, Christine Jorgensen Reveals, Dress Suits to Hire, Golden Age, and The Lightning Field. The nominees for Outstanding Los Angeles Theater are Bunbury, I Am My Own Wife, Porcelain, A Pebble in My Shoe: The Life and Times of John Shelby Spong, and Pera Palas.

Rent is competing for Outstanding Film: Wide Release with Brokeback Mountain, Capote, The Family Stone, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. TransAmerica, starring Atlantic Theatre Company member Felicity Huffman, is nominated for Outstanding Film: Limited Release opposite Beautiful Boxer, Mysterious Skin, Saving Face, and Walk on Water. Theater actor John Cameron Mitchell will receive a special GLAAD Award for including gay and lesbian couples in the music video of Bright Eyes’ “FIrst Day of My Life,” which he directed. The group will also receive a special award.
