Re-Animator The Musical Leads L.A. Weekly Theater Award Nominations

The nominations for the 33rd annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards have been announced. The prizes will be presented in a ceremony to be held on April 2 at the Avalon in Hollywood.

Re-Animator The Musical, seen at the Steve Allen Theatre, has received eight nominations, including one in the Musical of the Year category, and ones for director Stuart Gordon and choreographer Cynthia Carle. Similarly honored, with a total of five nominations is the Celebration Theatre’s Bash’d, which has also been nominated in the Musical of the Year category, and garnered two nominations for Ameenah Kaplan, in Direction of a Musical and Choreography categories. The other nominees for Musical of the Year are Cyclops: A Rock Opera, West Coast Ensemble’s Gypsy, and Black Dahlia Theatre’s Hey, Morgan!.

In non-musical categories, three shows are nominated for the Production of the Year award: Rogue Machine’s Small Engine Repair, Odyssey Theatre’s Day Drinkers, and Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble’s The War Cycle: Gospel According to the First Squad have also garnered nominations for their playwrights, John Pollono, Justin Tanner, and Tom Burmeister, respectively. The other shows nominated in Production of the Year are Blackbird (Rogue Machine) and Way to Heaven (Odyssey). Additionally, Stephen Sachs (Bakersfield Mist) and Nick Salamone (The Sonneteer) have been nominated for the Playwriting award.


Among the performers nominated for L.A. Weekly Theater Awards are Jon Jon Briones, Michelle Clunie, Ramin DeOcampo, David Fraioli, Maria Gobetti, Matthew Goodrich, Jim Hanna, Kate Huffman, John D. Johnston, Sandy Martin, Michael McGee, Marco Naggar, Brian Norris, Lynne Odell, Julia Prud’homme, Lisa Richards, Leon Russom, Amanda Weir, Norbert Weisser, Jacqueline Wright, and Tamara Zook.
