Chicago's Mercury Theater will present a return engagement of John Reeger and Julie Shannon's holiday musical The Christmas Schooner, set to run November 23-December 30. The production is directed by L. Walter Stearns, with choreography by Brenda Didier, and musical direction by Eugene Dizon.
The musical is inspired by the November 23, 1912 shipwreck of the Rouse Simmons, a vessel that would navigate the violent winter waters to bring Christmas trees from Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Chicago's German immigrants.
The Christmas Schooner will feature Karl Hamilton as Peter Stossel, Cory Goodrich as Alma Stossel, and Jim Sherman as Gustav Stossel. The creative team includes Jacqueline and Richard Penrod (scenic design), Carol Blanchard (costume design), and Jason Epperson (lighting design).
