The Building Stage to Adapt Wagner's Ring Cycle

By Dan Bacalzo • Aug 14, 2009 • Chicago
Chicago-based theater company, The Building Stage, will present a non-operatic theatrical re-imagining of the Richard Wagner opera cycle, The Ring of the Niebelung, entitled The Ring Cycle, to begin previews January 30, 2010, with an opening set for February 13.

This epic project will synthesize 16 hours of opera into a 6-hour theater piece co-directed by artistic director Blake Montgomery and company member Joanie Schultz. In addition, composer Kevin O'Donnell will work from Wagner's original score to create a new soundtrack for a rock orchestra that will perform live onstage in the show.

The cast will include Daiva Bhandari, Wm. Bullion, Lucy Carapetyan, Lindsey Dorcus, Pat King, Darci Nalepa, Bill O'Connor, Chris Pomeroy, Sarah Scanlon, Nick Vidal, and Mandy Walsh. The design team will be led by Lee Keenan and Meghan Raham.

In addition, the company will present the Building Stage LAB, a bi-monthly series of theatrical experiments exploring particular aspects and questions of performance in short form projects.
