Penguin Rep’s 2011 Season to Include Off-Broadway Production of The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith

Penguin Rep Theatre has announced its 2011 season, which will include a co-production of Angelo Parra’s The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith, starring Miche Braden. It will play St. Luke’s Theatre for an open-ended Off-Broadway run beginning Monday, June 6.

On the company’s mainstage schedule are Tom Dudzick’s portrait at a family blessed by an unexpected miracle, Greeting! (May 20 – June 12); Deborah Zoe Laufer’s romantic comedy about finding one’s muse, Sirens (July 8-31); Donald Margulies’ fanciful look at a Britishman’s incredible adventures, Shipwrecked! An Entertainment (August 12 – September 4); and Mat Smart’s examination of two brothers who find their game, their lives and their bond challenged as it’s never been before, Samuel J. and K. (October 14 – November 6).

Alongside these productions will be a one-night-only presentation of Robert Wuhl’s comic look at America’s past, Assume the Position on September 10; and Steve Solomon’s My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy on October 1. In addition, the company will offer presentations of Theatreworks USA productions of North, South, East & Jim West and Sweet Potato Pie & Such Queen Nur (July 20), as well as its series of Monday evening play readings, slated for May 23, July 11, July 25, August 22, September 12.
