Seven Centuries before Columbus attempted it, the Arabs mastered the trading route to China. Some of their experiences were exaggerated into mythic proportions. The Adventures of Sinbad, the merchant sailor, is one such tale, made famous in The Arabian Nights.
Sinbad shares his adventures of acquiring vast wealth despite narrowly escaping one harrowing adventure after another. Journeying from his home in Baghdad he encounters a one-eyed ogre, a giant bird, a sea monster, the formidable Sahara desert, and a valley of diamonds guarded by serpents before finally meeting the kind and generous people of Serendib(Sri Lanka).
