A Theatre Under the Influence pressents the English language North American premiere of Blasted, by Sarah Kane.
A middle-aged man and a young woman uneasily enact a cat-and-mouse game in an expensive hotel room while some sort of civil unrest breaks out on the streets outside. He is hard-bitten, a heavy smoker and drinker, outspokenly bigoted, a bully. She is meek, stutters when under stress, experiences periodic catatonic fits, and a vegetarian not by choice but because, literally, she can’t stomach dead meat. Their tete-a-tete is interrupted when the external conflict intrudes, exploding into the room. The line between the intimate and public arenas blurs in this physically and psychologically raw work with an edge of cool, detached wit and, ultimately, the slimmest glimmer of hope.
