About This Show

Dennis Foon’s The New Kid is a modern classic about the immigrant experience. The play was first devised in Canada in the 1980’s from the real-life stories of children settling in Vancouver. Now adapted for the increasingly diverse community in the DC metro area, The New Kid tells about a boy named Nick, who comes from Homeland. The playwright puts the audience into Nick’s shoes by having the American kids speak in gibberish and forcing us to learn a strange language and customs along with Nick. Told with humor and bold movement, this unforgettable play challenges everyone to empathize with newcomers to our community and to welcome the new perspectives they bring. Eric Ruffin directs.
