Anna Cora Mowatt was one of the first American women to achieve popular success as a playwright, and her 19th century farce Fashion (also known as Life in New York) was an instant success when it premiered in 1845. The story revolves around a newly rich businessman’s wife whose high social ambitions and extravagance are ruining her husband, who is caught in financial misconduct.
