About This Show

The Rockville Little Theatre presents A Thousand Clowns, Herb Gardner’s witty comedic tale of the struggle between non-conformity and love. Murray Burns hasn’t had a job since he stopped writing for a children’s television show. Now, instead of working, he spends most of his time in his messy New York City apartment teaching his 12-year-old nephew, Nick, who he has custody of, to follow in his footsteps. However, when Nick writes a school essay on the benefits of the unemployment system, Murray is forced to reevaluate his life when the school begins investigating how the young boy is being raised. Two social workers from the Child Welfare Bureau arrive and do not like what they see. One of the social workers, Sandra Markowitz, becomes attracted to Murray and offers her help. Meanwhile, Murray’s brother Arnold, who’s also his agent, and Leo, the host of the show Murray used to write for, both try to convince him to return to his old job so that he can keep custody of Nick.
