Formed in 2011, River City Taiko is a community group based in Richmond, VA, that plays traditional Japanese drums and related instruments. "Taiko" is the Japanese word for "drum," and has also come to refer to a modern style of ensemble drumming. Many of the drums used by River City Taiko were built by the group out of barrels covered on each end with rawhide.
River City Taiko has been active in and around Richmond, VA, since 2011, providing both lessons and performances. The director, Alasdair Denvil, currently teaches the taiko ensemble at University of Richmond.
River City Taiko has performed at University of Richmond, VCU, William & Mary, Dulles International Airport, the Science Museum of Virginia, the Children's Museum of Richmond, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Asian-American Celebration, Richmond Chinese Lunar New Year Festival at Deep Run High School, Dragon Boat Races at Rockett's Landing, Taste of India, India Spring Fest, Maymont Park, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Global A Go-Go with Bill Lupoletti (WRIR), Richmond Kids' Expo, the Richmond Marathon, and the Ukrop's 10K.
