Originally produced in 2003 at New York’s INTAR Hispanic American Arts Center, The Cook is the story of Gladys, a young cook who swears to protect her mistress’s Cuban home when the family flees to the U.S. following Castro’s rise to power. For the next 40 years Gladys attempts to keep her promise as the dream of the revolution settles into a troubled reality. Reminiscent of works such as Like Water for Chocolate, the play is permeated with Cuban culture and flavors.
