About the Show

Poor Richard, Jean Kerr’s witty comedy set in Manhattan, concerns a famous poet whose reputation for carousing is as strong as that for writing; his publisher, who is trying to get him to take his work seriously; and the publisher’s secretary, who has her own plan to shake the great man out of his slump and make him her own. This gem of a play starred Alan Bates as poet Richard Ford and Gene Hackman as publisher Sydney Carroll when it opened on Broadway in 1964.
