One of the most inventive works in the history of American musical theater, West Side Story came to life nearly 50 years ago when veteran New York City Ballet dancer and choreographer Jerome Robbins, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, conceived the idea of a musical about modern gangs on the streets of New York City.
