About This Show

The Undermain continues its 20th Anniversary Season with Mac Wellman’s latest play, Two September. In the play Wellman calls upon the specter of blacklisted writer and journalist Josephine Herbst to reveal the story of US covert operations in Vietnam at the end of World War II. The Pentagon, intent on fostering future democracies in Europe and the third world, recruited agents for a new covert organization, the Office of Strategic Services or OSS, soon to be known as the CIA. These idealistic young American men in suits were parachuted into Southeast China to meet with aspiring Vietnamese revolutionaries struggling to break free from their French colonial oppressors. On September 2, 1945 using the American Revolution as his inspiration, Ho Chi Minh declares Vietnamese independence from France with the support and guidance of the US. Two September reveals the little known story of early US involvement with Ho Chi Minh, the same man America would soon be trying to stop with billions and blood.
