About This Show

Based on the acclaimed book of photos and interviews, Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats , is a spectacular, toe-tapping, gospel-filled story of Yolanda, a street savvy teenager from Brooklyn who is sent to stay with her grandmother in South Carolina after the violent death of her beloved brother. Through storytelling and invigorating music, Yolanda’s grandmother teaches her the rituals of Sundays in the South, the traditions of African American heritage, and how to wear a “crown” with dignity. The show is directed by Crown’s playwright and Golden Globe Award Winner, Regina Taylor, a native of Dallas.
