forbidden desire, and dangerous women.

Selah Dance Collective and Novus Contemporary Ballet
present Sorcière X Carmilla, a gothic double bill exploring
the monstrous feminine through contemporary dance and ballet.

In Chloé Roberts’ Sorcière, the
witch becomes a vessel for feminine power, transformation, and rebellion.
Visceral and atmospheric, the work examines the fear and fascination
surrounding women whose bodies, knowledge, and identities resist control.

Then, Meredith Ventura and Angelia
Lane premiere Carmilla, a new one-act contemporary ballet
inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu’s landmark 1872 Gothic novella. Written more than
twenty years before Dracula, Carmilla tells the
story of a mysterious female vampire and her increasingly intimate relationship
with a young woman named Laura. Ventura and Lane’s adaptation draws out the
story’s queer Gothicism, sensuality, horror, and ambiguity, asking where desire
ends and danger begins.

Together, the two works reclaim the witch and the
vampire—figures historically used to embody fears of female appetite,
sexuality, independence, and power.

Dark, sensual, theatrical, and just in time for
Halloween, Sorcière X Carmilla brings an evening of Gothic
dance to the intimate stage at Center Stage Theater.
