New York City
Al Capp’s famous comic strip comes to life in the musical Li’l Abner. Set in the fictional town of Dogpatch, U.S.A., the plot centers on a rural southern community that has been deemed by the U.S. government as "the most unnecessary, no-account" place in the whole country thereby making it the perfect place to do atomic testing. With an evacuation set for the town, the citizens of Dogpatch set out to prove that their town is "necessary". The characters of Dogpatch are straight from Al Capp’s comic strip and include Mammy and Pappy Yokum, the homely Scragg family, Marryin’ Sam, Earthquake McGoon, Daisy Mae and of course, Li’l Abner.
The show features music by Gene de Paul, lyrics by Johnny Mercer and book by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank.
