Orchestra Liberation

Orchestra Liberation is a bold new Oakland-based orchestra bringing the power of the symphonic tradition together with the sounds, rhythms, and creative spirit of the Black Diaspora. Black-led, intergenerational, multi-genre, and centered on the Black musician experience, Orchestra Liberation reflects the Bay Area’s rich legacy of cultural innovation while reimagining what an orchestra can sound like, look like, and represent. At its heart is a simple but powerful idea: our music, played by our people, in community with one another.

The program moves fearlessly through Hip-Hop, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Bay Area classics, works by African American classical composers, original compositions, and beyond. Through bold arrangements, special guests, and unexpected collaborations, musical traditions and diverse communities come together—creating space for artists to see themselves represented, share their voices, and discover new possibilities through collective expression.

Led by Artistic Director Kev Choice, Orchestra Liberation combines strings, brass, woodwinds, and orchestral percussion with rhythm section, choir, vocalists, MCs, DJs, African and Latin percussion, spoken word artists, and dancers. More than an ensemble, Orchestra Liberation celebrates the power of representation, collaboration, and community—bringing people together across cultures, generations, and musical traditions through a shared experience of creativity and liberation.
