About This Show

Tamara & the Shadow Theatre of Java is a rare and magical theatrical performance. Tamara is the first Javanese-born female Dalang, or Shadow Master, to professionally perform Wayang Kulit, Indonesia’s spectacular theatre of shadow puppets that dates back to the 10th century. Accompanied by hypnotic live Gamelan music, the Dalang manipulates exquisitely carved and painted flat puppets behind a story cloth illuminated by the light of an oil lamp creating an interplay of shadows. In a performance perfect for western audiences, Tamara breathes life into each of the characters as the puppets cast their shadows on the cloth, playing out a timeless story of love, tragedy, and obstacles overcome.
