New York City
Director and movement artist Brendan McCall reinvents Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as a contemporary political drama of civil violence waged in the name of freedom. Housed in a decor evocative of late 20th-century Eastern Europe on the edge of collapse, McCall’s talented ensemble clothe their thirst for assassination and violence beneath the clothes of rhetoric, diplomacy, and nationalism. With a manipulation of the audience-configuration as well as the sequence of the play’s narrative, this performance of Julius Caesar is a beautiful yet terrifying cry of havoc for our times.
