Uncommon Comrades

Mieczyslaw Weinberg was counted among the Soviet Union’s most promising young composers. But in the waning days of Stalin’s terror, the Jewish Weinberg was imprisoned, to be freed only after Dmitri Shostakovich’s personal and risky intervention. Two of Weinberg’s defiant works open the concert: the Sixth Symphony and Trumpet Concerto. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s moving Symphony No.13, “Babi Yar,” which commemorates the 1941 massacre of more than 30,000 Russian Jews.
