About This Show

Manhattan Theatre Club continues the 35th anniversary season of its famed “Writers in Perforamance” (WIP) literary series with The Don, a celebration of Cervantes’ masterpiece Don Quixote in its 400th anniversary year. Interpreted by actors Mario Cantone, Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Daphne Rubin-Vega, with a live violin/electronic score by Julie Lyonn Lieberman, this theatrical salute to a classic will be introduced by acclaimed Don Quixote translator Edith Grossman.

Widely regarded as the first modern novel, Don Quixote chronicles the picaresque adventures of the knight-errant Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza as they travel through Spain “tilting at windmills.” In 1605 Cervantes brought to life the “ingenious gentleman” who – ill equipped with antiquated armor and illusions – went out into a decaying world to right wrongs and undo evil. Not a full-scale adaptation, The Don is rather an intimate exploration of a masterpiece with the power and beauty of Cervantes’ language expressed through acting and music.
