The Buckinghams

With a two minute recording “KIND OF A DRAG,” five teenagers from Chicago’s west side, found themselves propelled into the national spotlight. Neighborhood kids drawn together by music, they had landed a showcase on WGN TV’s All Time Hits, and succeeded in recording their first original song on USA Records. In February of 1967, the single swiftly climbed to the #1 spot on the national music charts.

Signing with Columbia Records, The Buckinghams had numerous hit singles: “KIND OF A DRAG,” “DON’T YOU CARE,” “MERCY, MERCY, MERCY,” “HEY BABY, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG,”
“SUSAN.”

All hit the top ten nationally and The Buckinghams were proclaimed a Pop Phenomenon. Television appearances on Ed Sullivan, Jerry Lewis, Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Nashville Network’s Classic Rock with Wolfman Jack, and PM Magazine, as well as extensive coverage in various popular magazines, confirmed The Buckinghams’ stardom. Their succession of hits led them to being named “The Most Listened to Band in America” in 1967.
