About This Show

Survivin’ the Rhythm & Blues of Life, written by Stephanie Berry and John-Martin Green, makes its world premiere at Aaron Davis Hall’s The Black Box Club. The show tells the story of Buster Brown, a middle-aged maintenance worker at the Apollo Theatre who’s had a 30-year vision of becoming an R&B singer. Standing on the very stage he has yearned to star on, Buster unconsciously summons the muses who live within the extraordinary photographic collage which adorns the Apollo lobby. With the help of these muses, Buster’s past is illuminated in a vibrant tapestry of unforgettable characters: the neighborhood philosophers, philanderers, political activists, working stiffs, hustlers and aspiring artists. The piece includes the music of such seminal R&B artists as Little Richard, Dinah Washington, Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, The Temptations, and The Supremes.

Admission includes two drinks at the Absolut Bar.
