About This Show

With a gift for hook-filled melodies, taut poetic narratives, and sardonic sense of humor, the brilliant Stew and his Afro Baroque Cabaret stylings returns to Joe’s with a peronally-themed selection of material spanning his 3 solo records, some brand new songs as well as a few hits from his now side project, The Negro Problem. Taking a cue from the vibe of his latest solo record, the uncharacteristically personal, Something Deeper Than These Changes, Stew plans a show which will “reach beneath the surface of the songs to pull out and expose the emotions behind the ideas.” Following his Joe’s Pub debut, the Village Voice raved: “Dude’s a better singer than Richard Pryor and a better stand-up comic than Jimmy Webb, and I’m tempted to call him America’s best songwriter” . The LA Times has exclaimed that Stew’s songs, combining elements of cabaret, soul and subversive pop are “gorgeous..deeply felt, wildly sophisticated and at times, hilarious.”
