Inspired by Raymond Carver’s acclaimed short story, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” choreographer Yasuki Yokoshi’s new work transforms Carver’s stark writings to magnificently muted and minimal languages of traditional Japanese Kabuki Su-odori dance. The evening-length multimedia project is created in collaboration with traditional artist Masumi Seyama VI, master teacher of Kanjyuro Fujima style Japanese. what we when we quietly challenges notions of cultural authenticity and ownership as well as the transgression of traditional art while subverting obvious exoticism.
