Inspired by the Moscow theater hostage crisis, Queens based choreographer Ursula Eagly transforms the Chocolate Factory basement into a pitch-black interrogation room for Nobody Try to be a Hero, in which audience members are hostages and the performers their captors. The piece takes place in darkness and is crafted out of direct orders, manipulations, sounds, and images glimpsed through a flashlight beam. The work draws on the cruelty of children, the Stockholm Syndrome phenomenon, and Rumsfeld’s approved interrogation techniques. Nobody Try to Be a Hero is performed by Ursula Eagly, Rebecca Davis, Abby Harris, and Jessica Morgan.

Ursula Eagly’s work has been presented by BAX, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Dance Now NYC, Galapagos, Movement Research at Judson Church, The Old American Can Factory, Diverse Works (Houston, TX) and PS122.

Rebecca Davis’ The birds are here. I hear them. is an episodic work involving the audience in a series of actions that alter the performance space as the performance progresses. Over the course of the performance, audience members receive hugs, take turns unwrapping a parcel, and pass a bowl of chocolate Kisses, collectively encompassing, internalizing (and quite literally) consuming the proceedings. In this way, the work aims to actively involve all senses. Birds and airplanes recur in various forms throughout as importers of landscape, time, and memory. The birds are here. I hear them. is performed by Abby Block, Rebecca Brooks, Ursula Eagly, Jessica Morgan and Sarah Van Buren, and will feature a sound score by Seth Nehil and Federico Ughi.

Rebecca Davis is the founder and curator of the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s bi-annual Dance Forum series. Her choreography has been shown at Diverseworks, d.u.m.b.o. dance festival, HERE Arts Center, Joyce Soho Presents, Movement Research at Judson Church, the Old American Can Factory, and WAX.
