Written by nine teenagers living in NYC’s shelters, Understand To Be Understood (U2BU) is a day-in-the-life of twelve characters attending/working at notoriously violent high schools in NYC. Meet the “thug” and find a new beat to this stereotype through his profound lyrics. Hang out in the cafeteria and watch a brutal beat down. Are metal detectors at these high schools protecting or damaging NYC’s youth? Juliette Avila directs this work, which is part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival.
