New York City
Michael Wells is taken hostage in Lebanon. His wife, Lainie, fights to bring him home. An ambitious reporter blames his continued captivity on an inept government. The State Department asserts the need for an unwavering foreign policy. As Michael is held prisoner in a windowless room in Beirut, Lainie strips the furniture of a room in their home so that she, at least symbolically, can share his ordeal. The emotional struggle to bring him home forces Lainie to make a choice between the government and the media. Does she trust the efforts of the State Department, or does she utilize the media to put pressure on those who hold the fate of her husband in their hands? As the months inch by it becomes increasingly difficult to remain patient, and Lainie is finally convinced to speak out and, in so doing, triggers the events that bring the play to its startling conclusion.
