New York City
The Bronx Academy of Art & Dance defiantly returns for its seventh year of keeping it queer in the Bronx with The Out Like That! Festival.
Quinceanera and Behind Walls
Quinceanera, an art house hit, has a story that’s fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino neighborhood in transition as experienced by two “black” sheep of the family: a young mexican woman just coming of age and her tough gay Cholo cousin. The film is preceded by award-winning Bronx-based filmmaker, Jose Vicenty’s humorous and sexy short film Behind Walls, a funny Puerto Rican melodrama about two men in love and the girl who comes between them.
Rock Bottom
Jay Corcoran’s daring and frank documentary about Crystal Meth addiction was a hit at last year’s NewFest and Stephen Holden of the The New York Times said it’s “A graphic study of sex and drug addiction, it goes way beyond the pieties of the recovery and therapy movements to confront deeper questions about the pursuit of sensation.” Filmmaker Corcoran is on hand for a post screening discussion along with reps from the Bronx Community Pride Center and the Latino Commission on AIDS to discuss the state of Crystal Meth in the Bronx and communities of color.
