The Misanthrope deals with the consequences of truth and hypocrisy in our lives. Alceste is a misanthrope, a hater of mankind. He is honest to a fault, and contemptuous of a society that tells the truth only when it is convenient for them to do so. Celimene, is the love of Alceste’s life. She is conceited and shallow (everything Alceste hates in a person). In an adpatation by Constance Congdon, Moliere’s play proves that manipulative social games can be the undoing of many.
