About the Show

Hostos alumna Yesenia Ortiz performs a stage adaptation of Zora Neal Hurston’s short story, Sweat, to benefit the Wallace I. Edgecombe Scholarship for the Arts and Humanities. Hurston’s story is about a horrible husband and a good wife; he beats her, fools around and psychologically tortures her, but gets his comeuppance and is a victim of his own evilness.

Ms. Ortiz (class of ’06) is the second recipient of the Edgecombe Scholarship, which began in 2005. As she finishes her studies in performing arts at Lehman College, the scholarship’s first recipient, Reyluis de los Santos, is about to graduate from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Thus, in the short time since its inception, the scholarship has already begun to help Hostos alumni to continue their studies.

6:00pm – Pre-Performance Reception, Hostos Art Gallery
7:00pm – Performance, Repertory Theater
