About This Show

Permanent Visitor is a two-month festival of plays written by and about the late Dawn Powell, the 20th-century American novelist and playwright.

Featured plays:

Jig Saw, January 18-February 3
Powell’s 1934 comedy set in a Manhattan penthouse where a hard-drinking socialite and her daughter, prim and fresh from finishing school, engage in a battle of wits and wills for the affections of the mother’s new boyfriend.

An Artist’s Life and Other Cautionary Tales About the Theatre, January 19-29
Three short plays by Kira Obolensky, adapted from three Powell stories, offers a glimpse at a life in the theater that most decidedly does not glitter.

As We Were Saying (Or Were We?), February 2-12
The world premiere of a new play by Laura Strausfeld in which a young Herald Tribune reporter becomes swept up by her subject — the ever-adroit, ever-drinking Dawn Powell — as she holds forth on her own life and the personal fictions that underpin all love and loss.

Women at Four O’Clock, February 14-March 3
World premiere of a previously unproduced play by Powell about a young woman whose attempts to change her dreary life lead to despair in the boozy, jazzy, fast-paced demi-monde of Roaring 20’s New York.

Straight Up…And With a Twist, February 16-March 9
World premiere of an evening of short plays adapted from Powell short stories by members of New Georges.
