About This Show

Navajo Memoirs: How Uncle Sam Incested Me (and then I got to meet Mary-Louise Parker), Mel England’s autobiograhic multi-media performance piece directed by Jill André, weaves Navajo ceremonies, songs and slides to chronicle the historic destruction of his ancestral people, and reconcile the shattered Hollywood dreams of the Navajo mother that abandoned him as an infant on the American Stage.

Named Mellow Moonshine at birth, Navajo Memoirs is based on the real life experience of Mr. England. The story of the Navajo people, dating from Pre-Columbus, through the Spanish Conquest, the American takeover and 20th Century Plutonium mining on a devastated reservation, and the consequent alcoholism, schizophrenia and madness of a Navajo Mother chasing Hollywood Rock Stars becomes the backdrop for Mr. England’s rite-of-passage. The return of the lost woman and her final battle for a boy she left in the world of the White Man set the stage for Navajo Memoirs’ more challenging questions of fantasy vs. reality in a land where you never really know which version of history to truly believe. Part of the 5th annual New York International Fringe Festival.
