New York City
Squotient Theatre presents the U.S. premiere of Nascendo, Romanian playwright Alina Nelega’s
passionate and tender portrait of cultural and personal struggles in the face of the fall of the Iron Curtain and the promise of the rebirth of a nation.
The play dramatizes an intimate moment between five women on the eve of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989. As chaos reigns outside the insular world of a Romanian maternity ward in Transylvania, five women butt heads and engage in a passionate struggle to assert their identities. Conflict and anxiety about the future erupt when a wounded and insolent young revolutionary intrudes upon their fragile society, forcing the women to decide whether to save or abandon him.
