About This Show

Jessie is a contemporary musical written by S. Kurt Kurta and his daughter January Tyme about a talented young band with dreams of sold-out concert tours. Jessie and her bandmates have the talent to make it big in the fickle, difficult world of pop music, but will their own faults, drug habits, and wild, bohemian behavior destroy all their dreams? The musical evokes in song, dance, and narrative the unfolding story of Jessie and the five members of her rock band. Gretchen Weigel directs.

January Tyme who wrote the music was one of (if not the) first white women to be signed by Motown records. She wrote the hit song “One Man Band” for 3 Dog Night and released her own album in the 1970s. January is no longer with us. Her father, S. Kurt Kurta (also author of the
book) is producing this show in memorium. It was written in the late 1960s/early 70s and has never been produced.

In addition to the struggle of the band to succeed, the show subtitled “God’s Child” deals with the forces of God, world and music on Jessie.
