About This Show

The Drama Book Shop and TheaterMania present Playwright & Performers: An evening with Jerry Herman and Stephen Citron. Herman and Citron plan to
discus Jerry Herman’s life and career, from his early work in cabaret to
his recent compositions for stage, screen, and television. Expect to hear
fascinating anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details about the world of
musical theater. The moderator for the evening will be David Finkle.

JERRY HERMAN is the only composer/lyricist in history to have three
Broadway musicals run more than 1500 performances: “Hello, Dolly!,”
“Mame,” and “La Cage aux Folles.” Mr. Herman is the recipient of numerous
awards including Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, Drama Desk, Variety and
Theatre Hall of Fame Award, and he has been elected to the Songwriters
Hall of Fame. He is most proud of having written songs that can have
lives of their own outside of their shows.

STEPHEN CITRON, author of JERRY HERMAN: POET OF THE SHOWTUNE, is well known for shedding a fresh light on the American musical theater and the artists who inhabit it. His previous books include “Songwriting, The
Musical from the Inside Out,” and biographies of Noël Coward, Cole
Porter, Alan Jay Lerner, Oscar Hammerstein 2nd, Stephen Sondheim, and
Andrew Lloyd Webber.

DAVID FINKLE writes about the theatre for THE VILLAGE VOICE and is Chief
Drama Critic for TheaterMania.

Admission is on a first come, first served basis and the program is subject to change without notice.
