New York Performing Artist Company presents Gypsy Tales, folktales and legends from Italy, Greece, and Spain as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.
A quartet of gypsy girls take the audience on a delightful trip along the northern shores of the Mediterranean, visiting three countries with a rich legacy of music, dance and storytelling. Journey to Greece, where a clever girl named Aliki fearlessly rids her village of a diabolical Ogress. From Spain, The Three Princesses of the Alhambra, based upon the legend as told by Washington Irving in his book Alhambra, is a poignant tale of three identical sisters, imprisoned in the Alhambra by their superstitious father. Finally in Bastianelo, a young bridegroom from Italy finds the world full of fools, each one more foolish than the next. This story-theater presentation also features lively folk dances, including Italy’s tarantella, quadriglia, and furlana, and Greece’s hasapiko and kalamatiano, and is underscored by engaging folk music of each of the countries.
With stories re-told and directed by Celeste Varricchio, and costumes designed by Alia Michele, Gypsy Tales features a cast of four Middle eastern dancers: Morgiana, Samara, Reyna, and Andrea.
