About This Show

Catherine Allen’s Dear Vienna is set in 1881, Austria where Vienna is the heart of Europe’s intellectual elite. Writers, philosophers, and other “deep thinkers” gather in coffee houses and salons to debate the future of their Continent, of art, of mankind itself. Into this rich loam walks… Sigmund Freud, a twenty-five year old medical school graduate with the heart of an artist and head of a scientist. Finding himself inexorably drawn to theater, music, and grandiloquence, he has decided he will become… a playwright. Dear Vienna examines a man’s life before prominence and imagines fantastic roots. In it, Freud’s exploration of his desires becomes not just a personal journey but a blueprint for his magnum opus, psychoanalysis. The play posits how our experience as individuals cannot but influence our life’s work, no matter how sweeping or “impersonal” the hypothesis. Julie Hamberg directs.

There is an additional matinee on Saturday, November 6 at 3:30pm.
