The only established modern dance company in New York City headed by a Mexican/American, the Company presents Danza Moderna, featuring three premieres and dances from the treasury of the Company classics.
The premieres are Los Tres, a trio by Annabella Gonzalez with Mexican zapateado rhythms and striking masks by Alejandro Zarate, It Takes Two, a passionate duet by Johnny Martinez with original guitar music by Steve Ippolito and Amore, a female solo by Ms. Gonzalez to an exquisite aria from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The provocative mix of styles includes modern, jazz, Latino, neoclassical, theatrical and comedic pieces. Works by Ms. Gonzalez include LatinBach, a quintet with Latin rhythms set to music by J. S. Bach and the hilarious Mozartmania, a satire on exaggerated ballet positions with music by Mozart, shiny yellow and green costumes, “Turkish” turbans, and red feathers. Works by Mr. Martinez to contemporary music are his jazzy Alone? [In the Dark with Eyes open] with music by Nat Valentine and Coming of Age, an affecting male duet to music by Stefania de Kenessey.
