New York City
A Quentin Tarantino meets Sam Shepard psychodrama of murder, revenge and family honor.
“A violent, suspenseful and wild ride through the dusty chaparral.”
-Chris Creson, Northern Lights Entertainment
Cockfighters begins in a lonely West Texas barn after the night’s illegal cockfights have ended. Hump, the small town’s sheriff, arrives to toe the line with rustic patriarch Dwight Fowler. A brutal murder has turned cornfields into battlefields, where vengeance and violence come more naturally to men than to the gamecocks they fight. Dwight’s seventeen-year-old daughter Shirl is dead and someone is going to pay. His slow son Clarence is fuming about dead roosters. His drunken son CD is plotting revenge. And the law is telling him that justice doesn’t belong to sinners. Well, we’ll just see about that.
The New York premiere of Cockfighters, a finalist of the 2002 Playwrights First Award and winner of the 2002 Fullerton College New Play Festival, is directed by Sarah Gurfield (Bat Boy the Musical, A.D.; The Grave White Way) and features Scot Carlisle, Bill Fairbairn, Raphael Fetta, Eevin Hartsough*, Patrick Melville, David Sitler* and Dawn Sobczak.
Cockfighters is presented by Oberon Ensemble Theatre and Laura Penney.
