Clinton Turner Davis directs the Genesius Theatre Guild’s production of Box, by playwright Fred Shahadi. The play tells the story of four Haitian refugees stowing away aboard a commercial ocean liner while sealed inside a large coffee container. During their voyage, the boat goes off course causing them to run out of oxygen. As each man loses life, they are visited in turn by the ghost of Henry “Box” Brown, a former slave who literally mailed himself to freedom in 1848. “Box” helps each man face absolution and cross over to the other side. Box is about the cost of freedom, what you’re willing to pay, what you’re willing to give, and what you’re willing to steal. Part of the 2003 New York International Fringe Festival.
