Black Stuff

Black Stuff is an unbiased, often irreverent, always uncensored satire exploring the contradictions of black identity through the minds of two African-American men. Called “hysterical… a caustic study of the African-American experience from the inside out,” by the Los Angeles Times, the show begins with a radio announcement promoting a wrestling bout that fights “for the soul of Black America.” The wrestlers are four black archetypes: the perfect black professional, the street black who does not believe in decorum, the formerly violent rapper and the hypocritical minister. The announcement prompts two black men to have identical dreams of dying and being denied entrance to the black section of the pearly gates because they are not “black enough.” Through a fusion of scenes, monologues, candid voice overs, art, video and classic soul and rap music, they go on a satirically comic journey that examines how race has impacted their personal experiences and their perceptions of black culture.

Black Stuff is being presented as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival.
